Life Begins

From simple chemistry to the first living cells โ€” the spark that made Earth unique and eventually gave rise to economies.

The Origin of Life

About 3.8 billion years ago, in Earth's primordial oceans, complex molecules began to self-replicate. These early life forms were simple single-celled organisms โ€” but they changed everything.

Cyanobacteria learned to photosynthesize, slowly filling the atmosphere with oxygen over billions of years. This Great Oxygenation Event killed most anaerobic life but paved the way for complex organisms.

The Cambrian Explosion

About 540 million years ago, life diversified dramatically. Complex multicellular organisms appeared โ€” fish, insects, plants. Life moved from oceans to land. Ecosystems became complex webs of producers, consumers, and decomposers.

  • โ€ขLife has existed for ~3.8 billion years, but complex life is only ~540 million years old
  • โ€ขPhotosynthesis transformed Earth's atmosphere and climate
  • โ€ขBiodiversity creates the ecosystems that human economies depend on

From Ecology to Economy

Ecosystems are nature's economies โ€” organisms compete for resources, cooperate for mutual benefit, and specialize in niches. Human economies follow remarkably similar patterns. Understanding ecology gives us insight into how economies self-organize.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

If Earth's history were compressed into 24 hours, humans would appear in the last 1.2 seconds. The entire history of economics fits in the last 0.001 seconds.
