Planet Earth
Earth transformed from a molten ball into a planet with oceans, atmosphere, and continents โ setting the stage for life.
The Early Earth
Young Earth was a hellscape โ covered in molten lava, bombarded by asteroids, with no oxygen in its atmosphere. Over hundreds of millions of years, it cooled. Water vapor condensed into oceans. The first atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
Plate Tectonics
Earth's surface is broken into tectonic plates that slowly move. This movement creates mountains, opens ocean basins, and drives volcanic activity. Plate tectonics recycles minerals and nutrients, making Earth geologically active โ unlike Mars, which went cold.
- โขEarth's iron core generates a magnetic field that shields us from solar radiation
- โขPlate tectonics recycles carbon and regulates climate over millions of years
- โขThe distribution of continents affects ocean currents, climate, and biodiversity
Geography Shapes Economy
Why are some countries resource-rich and others aren't? Plate tectonics. Oil deposits formed from ancient oceans. Mineral veins formed at plate boundaries. Even the shape of coastlines affects trade. Geography is destiny โ at least in part.
๐ก Did You Know?
Earth is the only planet in our solar system with plate tectonics. This geological recycling system is thought to be essential for maintaining a habitable climate.
